Should I wear jewelry to my headshot session?
When photographing headshots with women I almost always deal with this question; I would say 95% of the time.
And without a doubt my answer is always the same; NO! I’m sorry ladies but unless you actually work in the business and wearing jewelry is crucial to your brand, please refrain. Headshot jewelry is not a phrase you ever hear, nor is it something you want to stare at. The issue is that a headshot is just that, a photograph of your head; your face, your eyes, you! What you don’t want is someone looking at the shiny bling you have in your ears and totally ruin the moment. Remember this is all about connecting with that end user. Remember the saying “the eyes are the window to the soul?” Ditch the jewelry and focus on your eyes.
Okay this might seem a bit hard to hear. I get it. So, if you MUST wear earrings make them studs. Nothing more. Again, less is more. Necklaces? Like earrings I’m not a fan for headshots. But if it’s part of your identity make it as unobtrusive as possible. Not the type w long dangling things. Depending on the final crop of the image, this additional piece will most likely become a problem. Crop large enough to include the entire piece and the headshot doesn’t look as up-close, personal and inviting. Crop to tight and half of the dangly thing will be out of frame. It just won’t look right.
Another perspective is that what you think is a beautiful piece of jewelry might not be for someone else. Why take the risk of turning someone off when the easier option is simply not to wear the piece? In addition, your tastes will change over time. What you love today you might hate a year from now. Or what if the piece reminds you of the person who gave it to you, yet you’re no longer with that person?
There are many reasons why you shouldn’t do it. Play it safe, refrain today and be happy a year from now!
